It’s Christmas time! A truly wonderful time of year. All of the lights and decorations, special events and if we are lucky – just a little snow to make it a white Christmas. There is also the giving of gifts, which may lead to some stress in your life.
So I was wondering; what is the story behind the giving of gifts and Santa Claus and some of the other traditions we celebrate this time of the year. And what about the 12 Days of Christmas song and all of the gifts associated with it?
Well, let’s start at the beginning: Christmas celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ (sometime around 4 B.C.). The Gospel of Matthew records the first Christmas gift given – when three Magi (Wise men) came from the east to worship the one who was the newborn king of the Jews (Matthew 2:1-2,9-11) They brought with them 3 gifts: gold, frankincense and myrrh to present to the baby Jesus. This is where the 12 Days of Christmas comes from – according to tradition the 12 days take place from December 25th to January 6th (the Epiphany) when the Magi came to visit Jesus.
The legend of Santa Claus is traced back to Saint Nicholas who was the bishop of Myra in Asia Minor during the 4th century. Saint Nicholas had a reputation for his generosity and kindness, especially toward children and was known for giving treats and small presents to them. As far as coming down the chimney and putting presents in stockings that part of the story if folklore.
By the time of the 10th century almost every country was participating in the gift giving tradition started by Saint Nicholas. Early gifts were homemade foods, sweets and oranges (which were a rare treat) along with handmade crafts. It remained that way until the industrial revolution when manufactured items became more common than handmade.
